Rug Guide

At illi Rugs, we believe your rug should be a unique reflection of your style. All our illi rugs are handwoven to order. We offer a vast selection of standard sizes to perfectly suit your space, and a range of customisable rugs that you can adapt to your favourite colours and tailor to your layout.

But before you get started, here are some helpful tips to guide your rug selection and rug selection and styling:

Living Room

A living room looks most appealing when you follow the rule of thumb for rugs: your rug should be about six to eight inches wider than your sofa on each side. According to the Morocco Collection website, an average two-seater sofa will be 6 feet wide, so any 8 feet wide rug will give you the space at each end needed to elevate the look and feel of the room.

The Bedroom

As your sanctuary, a place to feel free and comforted, here you may want a soft and lush feel underfoot throughout, or perhaps just around the bed. We recommend a large sized knotted weave rug, which not only adds a cozy touch to the space but serves as a luxurious foundation for your daily and nightly retreat.

Remember to take into consideration the size of your bed when choosing a rug - a large rug can either stop right before your nightstands or go under your nightstands as well, but it looks best if the rug protrudes at the end of your bed.

The Dining Room

The dining room is also an essential space for gathering and enjoyment with others, where you want to give the essence of a warm, familiar atmosphere. For a dining room rug, we feel the rug should be 4 feet larger than the dining room table itself, with all chairs able to fit entirely on the rug (even when pulled out to sit on.)

For a rectangular table, a large or medium rectangular rug works best, but if you have a small round table then a round rug may be more aesthetically pleasing.

The Office

Offices can be set up in many different ways, but a rug that's too small for the space can make it feel disproportionate and uncomfortable. For open spaces, we think you’ll find an area rug that extends through the entire area of furniture really anchors the space and ties it together.

The Hallway

As the point where you welcome guests into your home, you shouldn’t underestimate the impact of a rug in your hall space. It must embody the comfortable feeling you want your guests to have when entering.

An overwhelmingly large rug would not look right, depending on how large your hallway is of course, but broadly speaking a small rectangular flat weave rug would complement the space well. A small, low profile runner rug says that you know how to decorate your space and bring comfort underfoot as well.
